Cannabis for Pets

Cannabis is a medicinal herb that helps treat pets that have arthritis, anxiety separation, cancer, digestive problems, epilepsy and seizures, joint problems pains and inflammation, aging problems, as well as, skin and allergy problems. People think that cannabis is marijuana. This is not true. Dogs are not taking marijuana; rather, dogs are taking hemp, which also comes from the cannabis plant.

For a long time, hemp was illegal in America because hemp was mistakenly included with other forms of cannabis. Hemp, which can treat medical conditions, has no intoxicating effects, and should not ever have been an illegal drug.

Marijuana versus Hemp

Marijuana comes from the plant Cannabis indica. Hemp comes from the plant Cannabis sativa. You can understand the confusion since Marijuana and Hemp both come from the Cannabis plant.

There are a total of 60 chemicals in the cannabis plant. These chemicals are called cannabinoids. Of all the chemicals, only two chemicals stand out: cannabidiol or CBD and tetrahydrocannabindol or THC. The CBD chemical is the therapeutic chemical, and the THC is the chemical that makes you high or intoxicated.

The THC in marijuana contains between 10 – 15 percent of the herb. However, the THC amount in hemp is only 0.3 percent or less. At this low rate, the THC in hemp has no intoxicating effect on dogs or people. Plus, the CBD, the substance that provides therapeurtic effects, is higher in hemp than it is in marijuana.

What Is CBD?

The cannabis plant contains 60 chemicals such as,  CBD, phytocannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids. Dogs and humans have cannabinoid receptor sites in the brain, in the nervous system, in peripheral organs and in their immune cells. All these receptor sites are included in the endocannabinoid system.

How Can CBD Hemp Help Your Dog?

The chemicals or cannabinoids in hemp have anti-inflammatory effects. The  cannabidiol or CBD can help with pain, tumors, seizures, muscle spasms, skin conditions, appetite stimulation, aggression, anxiety and neurological disorders. There are ongoing studies to find out if the CBD can help type 1 diabetes, organ diseases and cancer.

Veterinarians are also finding CBD hemp can be useful in treating acute ailments like sprains and strains, torn ligaments, bone breaks and even reduce swelling, pain and stiffness from post-operative care.

The CBD hemp can be taken with conventional medication. In addition, by adding CBD hemp, you can lower the dosage of the conventional medication. This is beneficial since conventional medication has side effects.

How Fast Does CBD Hemp Take Affect?

The answer to this question is patience. You will see relief from acute pain in a few hours; however, relief from inflammation could take a couple of days to show the effects. The most common side effect from CBD Hemp is drowsiness. It’s the same drowsiness from taking a Benadryl. Itching and vomiting are sensitivity reactions rarely seen in dogs. However, if your dog were sensitive to CBD, then, you need to stop giving it to him/her.
